Why is there a movie called ’65’?

Um. So. This movie has a narrow band of people that will not not hate having seen it.

Ya like dinosaurs? Ya liked Jurassic Park? Even the good ones?

What about the dad/daughter trope ala Logan or Mandalorian or Last of Us?

Survival films?

Do you like Adam Driver in space? Do you like topless Adam Driver?

Do you enjoy action?

What about a thought-out, well written narrative?

Good script?

Logic?

Uh. No. Nope.

Do you like having your mind numbed?

Do you like a bunch of noise?

Are you a child?

Do you not give a shit?

Yeah. Ok. Go for it.

I mean. Itโ€™s not terrible. Itโ€™s just not not bad. Itโ€™s certainly bad. But itโ€™s notโ€ฆ atrocious. Itโ€™s not so bad that youโ€™ll be offended. Thereโ€™s not nearly enough substance to the movie to emotionally or mentally affect anyone who gives a shit. Itโ€™s entertaining. Itโ€™s fun-ish.

Adam Driver is great. The r/dinosaurs subreddit claims that the dino designs are all terrible. I mean, they really do just look like Game of Thrones dragons without the wings. Thereโ€™s a genuine effort to build an emotional background for both characters, however inefficient. The other character is a prepubescent girl who speaks a language other than English, so thereโ€™s not a lot of clear, direct communication between the leads, and thatโ€™s honestlyโ€ฆ a trope. Itโ€™s frustrating, because a smart film would find a way to have two nonverbal leads communicate in a way that is clear to the audience, right? Sort of like, say, I donโ€™t know, a space cowboy who always wears a helmet and a baby alien who doesnโ€™t speak? Orโ€ฆ say, a wizened warrior and a young girl with similar traits who speaks a different language?

4/10.

Nope.

Wondering how my rating system works? Let me explain!

    1. I’m a bit of a hypocrite here. I always whine that people don’t pursue original ideas- and this really is pretty unique of a concept. A dinosaur survival action film- but in spaCE?! Wow. wow.

But also I thought it lacked any creativity beyond that. It’s far too straightforward, and doesn’t show us or teach us anything new.

      1. Yeah, but again, for me it’s horses for courses. Not all films need to be great works of literary fiction. I found this one of the most immersive experiences in cinema I’ve had in a while. If you’ll allow it, here’s a link to my review. ๐Ÿ™‚

      2. Hahah – no it’s all good – I think you should passionately have your opinion. ๐Ÿ™‚ That’s what I do. I think there’s also film reviewers for courses, if that makes sense. So long as you know what you like/hate, that’s kinda important for your readers. ๐Ÿ™‚
