The Chad Archibald flick “It Feeds”, starring Ashley Greene, is a rounded, competent horror film that falls just short of being a good movie. It is a decent late night flick if you need something to watch while folding laundry.
The Goldilocks of Horror
It’s hard to point to any one thing that was crappy in this movie. The acting was sound, the mystery was enticing, the horror elements were scary, and the climactic set was really great. To confront the demon, they inception their way into the demon’s mind through telekinesis, and the mind of the demon is constructed to be a creepy, gothic playscape for our actors, who also get decked out in awesome goth costumes. The creature design was excellent, even if it was derivative of the Vecna design from Stranger Things.

If I had to, I’d say that the movie lacked any real tension. Between the murder redneck who pops up at the beginning and the end, and the early explanation of what the demon is defused the tension far too early. As a result, I found it difficult to remain invested in the film. I got what the overall direction the film was going to take, and I didn’t feel like I missed out on anything when I stepped away to put the clothes away or get some water.
One other thing that may have been a big detraction from this film was the daughter character. Her acting was passable, because it was clear she had some ability and direction to work with. The bigger issue was that there wasn’t any substance to her emotional arc. The epilogue involves her making peace with her father’s suicide, but it would have been more impactful if this emotional arc was tied in with finding a way to defeat the demon- much like other horror movies do. Furthermore, I don’t truly recall many moments of emotional depth or connection that the two women shared. The plot just kept careening forward, and didn’t really let up.
Again, the film was acceptable, and I didn’t hate anything about it. Some of the costumes and set designs were great, but there wasn’t enough of it to help the film feel elevated from ‘mediocre’ to ‘good’. As such, I rate this film
YMMV
I watched it on Hulu.
