Today I learned that Alden Ehrenreich is not the same guy as Emile Hirsch, and not in a racist way. I think. Onto the review. As far as antichrist horror films go, they’re usually pretty run of the mill. You gotta have a mom who doesn’t want the kid to be the antichrist, baby troubles, a dude who may more may not be a satanist or may or may not be in on it.
Antichrist Movies are Underserved
There’s a slew of these types of films out there. I recently watched The Vatican Tapes, which was thoroughly underwhelming. I’ve talked about The Last Rite, and the titties contained therein. There’s also the Sydney Sweeney film Immaculate, which I think has some layer hidden beneath the boring. There’s also the classics like The Omen and Sinister: more or less the same, if you discount that they’re the forefathers of this subgenre. Nothing really worth spending time on if you’re a millennial film watcher who’s not really into movies.
This film, Son, at the very least, has a bit of a twist to it in that the antichrist baby isn’t just ‘ooh gonna kill ya!’, but is actually a zombie-like creature that can turn back to normal if it can consume flesh. That’s neat! Then there’s the mom who’s like, ‘oh no, I don’t want an antichrist baby!’, but then decides she loves her kid, and then later has to contend with loving her child and allowing her child to live by feeding it humans. Then there’s also a bit of ‘do we believe the victim’ and incest and sexual assault. Very edgy stuff. Nothing graphic, lots implied, even more in the exposition.

I don’t like when people get mad at me
Why You May Want to Watch “Son”
The film doesn’t have much substance to it. It’s got an interesting character in the mother, who’s struggling with her trauma and the desire to care for her child and the fact that her child eats people. But the film was long and the story was short, which didn’t allow for too much character or thematic exploration. It also wasn’t very scary. No boobies either.
It’s worth a watch if you like antichrist movies, horror with a psychological element, light gore, or new twists and takes on established tropes. Also worth a shot if you wanna see the guy who was in Speed Racer instead of the guy who was in Solo, or also vice versa. Son is rated
YMMV
As most things, I watched the movie Son on Tubi.
